CHAPTER TEN

Garret tried not to stare. He tried his damnedest to concentrate on the novel in his hand as he sat by the dark window, but it was nearly impossible. Owen sat at the kitchen table, eyebrows furrowed in concentration. His forehead and nose were a little darker thanks to the sun down by the lake. It had been a good day. Owen stared down at a Sudoku book, pencil poised in his mouth. The pencil left Owen's lips to scratch something on the paper, then went back to trace the line of his mouth. He looked up suddenly, catching Garret looking.

Garret cleared his throat, looking to the ceiling, pretending like there was something terribly interesting there. "I—uh—think there may be a leak in the roof there." He ignored the grin on Owen's face. He closed his book and stood. "I'm going to go check it out."

"What? You're going to go on the roof? Now? It's dark out."

"Uh…" He looked out the window. It was pitch black out, the sliver of a moon offering little light. "Yeah. Why not?" Idiot.

Owen shrugged. "Okay. Want help?"

"I got it."

That was stupid. Good job, Garret. Now, he had to climb up on the roof in the dark, just because he couldn't stop staring at Owen. What the hell has gotten into you? He needed to get his shit together if he was going to do his job. First jerking off, then the incident in the woods with those two fuck-faces. When he saw the looks on their faces, the way they looked at Owen, he knew they'd meant no good. He'd wanted to pummel them, make them choke on their own teeth.

He'd stopped himself, somehow. He didn't like the way Charlie had smiled when he'd slinked away like the greasy little lizard he was.

If he hadn't have been so distracted, if he hadn't let his mind wander like he had, he would have noticed Owen wandering off. He would have found him sooner, and not put him at risk like he did. But he had been distracted. His mind was filled with the images he'd seen that day: Owen in the shower, stroking himself, sighing after he came. Even now, it seemed impossible to think of anything else. Garret gave his head a shake as he pulled open the shed doors.

Garret grabbed the ladder, noticing the gun hanging on the wall. He would have to clean it out. It might come in handy if they were going to be staying in the cabin. There was too much wilderness around. Too many animals.

He picked the gun up and left it by the door, leaning against the shed, before dragging the ladder back to the cabin.

Shaking his head, he muttered a curse. He was being an idiot. A leak? There was no leak, and nothing wrong with the roof. He'd checked it out the very first day they were there. But he'd needed to get out of the house. Away from Owen. He was just going
